Since the "Meet the Planner" section of our website needs to stay concise and professional, I figured it would be fun to give you more of a glimpse into my personality and who I am. Read on to find out some quirky facts about me.

Five Fun Facts about Laura | LIG Events - Washington, DC Wedding and Event Planners

1 - I LOVE the beach.

Well, this one is a no-brainer. I'm a tropical child even though I was born on a very cold day in December in downtown Washington, DC.
(Yes, that's right. I'm a NATIVE Washingtonian. "A rare unicorn" as someone I met at a bar once put it. But I digress...)
My parents both hail from Puerto Rico, a land filled with gorgeous sandy beaches and clear blue waters. My parents didn't hesitate to introduce me to that beautiful island -- my first trip to Puerto Rico was when I was a whopping three months old and I returned every single summer until I was in high school. I still try to go back as often as possible!

We also often spent a week each summer on the Outerbanks of North Carolina, another beautiful beach destination. I remember entire days filled with sand castles, boogie boarding, learning (unsuccessfully) how to skim board and learning (successfully) how to drive the family SUV on the sandy beaches.

So, needless to say, the beach is my happy place. And I'm a total beach snob. (I blame my parents for this because they always took me to such beautiful places!)

2 - I studied at the Sorbonne in Paris.

I was lucky enough to be able to study abroad in Paris during my junior year of college. Exploring Paris (and other European cities) at such a pivotal time in my life was truly a wonderful and unforgettable experience. Going out for midnight crepes on warm Fall nights, studying in the Luxembourg Gardens, walking around the Louvre for hours on end... those are memories I am so fortunate to have and look back on fondly.

While in Paris, I had the opportunity to take a few classes at the Sorbonne, which was an interesting and curious opportunity. While I found my French Literature classes fairly boring (sorry Professor Laurent!), I learned a lot about the differences in American and French educational systems.

I also took a ceramics class at the Ateliers de Louvre. How cool was it that I got to go to class at the Louvre every week and stop into the museum and visit one of my favorite pieces of art, the Winged Victory of Samothrace, whenever I wanted?!

3 - I once had a piece on display at the National Museum for Women in the Arts.

Disclaimer: I do not consider myself an artist in any way, shape, or form. However, I took ceramics classes in high school and fell in love with the art form. During our senior year, our art teacher, the beloved Margo Klass, arranged for some of her students to display their pieces in a group show at the National Museum for Women in the Arts in downtown DC. (I went to an all-girls school, so the museum was obviously a perfect fit.)

So, through Mrs. Klass' connections, some of the students in my class, myself included, can now say that we have had a piece on display at a pretty important museum.

4 - I love exclamation points! (And parenthetical phrases.)

If you email with me regularly, you'll find at least one exclamation point in each of my emails. I just can't help myself! (See!) I'm a pretty enthusiastic person so exclamation points really seem to suit me.

I also love to use parentheses for some unknown reason. (You have probably picked up on that if you read this blog with any regularity.) I'm not sure why I like parentheses so much, and to be honest it's probably very grammatically incorrect, but I tend to write as if I'm having a conversation with someone and parentheses just work for me.

Proof that I can never strike a serious pose. (Taken the day after the White House State Dinner in May 2010. Load-out of the tent had begun, hence my very casual outfit.)

5 - I love sugar.

My sweet tooth is probably going to to be the death of me. It's crazy how much sugar I can consume without going into a diabetic shock. But I love candy, ice cream, fro-yo, cakes, doughnuts, chocolates, macarons, and anything else that has a sugar base that you can think of.

For the record, and in case you ever want to buy me a present, these are my favorite treats:
-Candy: Milk Duds, Sour Brite Gummy Worms & Hot Tamales
-Macarons: Framboise (raspberry) & Cassis flavors from Ladurée. (Side note: Olivia Macaron in DC is great and will always be my DC pick for macarons, but if you're close to a Ladurée shop....go!)
-Cake: Chocolate cake with vanilla frosting is always a winner in my book!

And in case you're wondering, my energy must come from sugar because I don't consume any caffeine of any kind. I don't drink coffee or soda and rarely drink tea. Just water for this lady. With a side of candy, of course.

xo,
Laura
